Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
